Vietnam won four medals at the 23rd International Biology Olympiad (IBO) that closed Sunday in Singapore, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

Nguyen Thu Trang, a 12th-grader at Le Hong Phong Specialized High School in the northern province of Nam Dinh, grabbed a silver medal while her schoolmate Tran Duc Huy bagged a bronze.

The other two bronzes went to Nguyen Thi Hai Anh, an 11th-grader at Vinh Phuc Specialized High School in the northern province of Vinh Phuc, and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hong, a 12th-grader at a specialized high school under the Hanoi National University of Education.

The top gold was awarded to Singaporean Nol Swaddiwudhipong, even though Singapore and the U.S. garnered the maximum of four gold medals each.

Sixty three territories and countries sent 234 winners of their national editions to this year’s competition, starting July 8, where the contestants were challenged to work through stimulating and novel biology problems and experiments.

Vietnam had secured three bronzes and one certificate of merit at the previous Olympiad in Taiwan.

IBO is a science Olympiad targeted to promote a career in science for talented students in their final two years at school, and to stress the importance of biology in current society.
