Many elementary, middle, and high schools in Ho Chi Minh City welcomed their students back on Monday morning to prepare for the 2022-23 school year.

At Nguyen Hue Elementary School in District 1, many parents took their children to school as early as 6:00 am.

Teachers already formed two lines at the entrance to welcome the very first students of the new school year.

“I woke up early today and felt very excited because I am officially a first grader,” said Gia Phuc.

In order to create a joyful atmosphere for students, especially the first graders who are coming to school for the first time, teachers were tasked with welcoming the students and guiding them to the schoolyard, according to Bui Thi Thanh, principal of Nguyen Hue Elementary School.

The homeroom teachers then took their students to their classrooms to introduce the school regulations and learning schedules.

Meanwhile, the school management board met with parents of first graders to talk about the curriculum and answer their questions, Thanh elaborated.

For the 2022-23 school year, Ho Chi Minh City is expected to have nearly 700,000 elementary students, over 400,000 middle school students, and about 245,000 high school students, according to the municipal Department of Education and Training.

By September, the city will put to use 575 new classrooms, including 210 in kindergartens, 218 in elementary schools, and 147 in middle schools.

The city needs to recruit 892 preschool teachers, 2,355 elementary school teachers, 1,698 middle school teachers, and 296 high school teachers for this academic year.

Many high schools reported they were unable to recruit teachers in some subjects such as English, computing, music, and art, the education department added.
