All five members of the Vietnamese student team performed well at the 2024 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Iran, winning two gold and three silver medals, the Ministry of Education and Training announced on Sunday.
The two gold medals went to Than The Cong and Truong Phi Hung, both of whom are 12th graders at Bac Giang High School for Gifted Students in northern Bac Giang Province.
Three other grade-12 students won silver medals: Nguyen Nhat Minh from the High School for Gifted Students of the Hanoi University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi, Ha Duyen Phuc from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students in north-central Thanh Hoa Province, and Nguyen Thanh Duy from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students in northern Hai Phong City.
Hosted by the Isfahan University of Technology in the Iranian city of Isfahan from July 21 to 29 (local time), the 54th IphO has attracted 198 contestants, including 15 schoolgirls, from 46 countries and territories, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency.
According to the IPhO statutes, each national team may consist of up to five high school students and two leaders.
The 2024 IPhO consists of one theoretical and one practical exam, each of which lasts for five hours.
The Ministry of Education commented that this year's competition was both interesting and difficult, with theoretical and practical exams closely related to real life and advanced scientific and technological applications.
The award presentation ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 am on July 28 in Iran (local time).
The achievements of the Vietnamese contestants at the IPhO this year surpass those of 2023, when the team won two gold, two silver, and one bronze medals, according to the ministry.
The IPhO has been an annual event for high school students since 1967, with Vietnam participating in the competition for the first time in 1981.
