Thai thrillers hit local screens this summer

“Pee Mak” and “Thongsook 13”, two Thai horror blockbusters, are being screened at local cinemas this month.

“Thongsook 13”, which features pop singer Shin Chinawut and is directed by Taweewat Wantha, one of Thailand’s most talented directors, has been taken to local cinemas since June 7.

Essentially a Thai-style reworking of “Friday the 13th”, “Thongsook 13” is a decently made horror that uses humor to liven up spine-chilling thrills. Like its Hollywood predecessor, the film revolves around a similar premise where a group of teenagers pay a visit to a supposedly haunted place and run into some bad company from a long time ago.

“Pee Mak”, which has become the new record grossing domestic film of all time in Thailand and has earned a total of US$33 million, will be screened in Vietnam starting June 21.

Based on a famous Thai ghost folk tale called “Mae Nak Phra Khanong” and starring Mario Maurer, a German-Thai-Chinese actor, the film has created a big stir and is a huge box-office success in Thailand in 2013.

In the Rattanakosin Kingdom, Mak (played by Mario Maurer) leaves his pregnant wife Nak to fight in the war and meets four soldiers who become his best friends. During this time, his wife Nak struggles to give birth to their baby.

When the war ends, Mak invites his friends to Phra Khanong and meet his wife Nak. Meanwhile, rumors spread around the town that Nak is a ghost. His four friends and villagers try desperately to persuade Mak that his wife is already dead.
