In Hanoi, the remake of last year’s famous art project “Goc Pho Danh Vong” (The Corner of Fame) is being brought on stage on July 5, 6 and 7 at the Worker Theatre. This year’s show will remake last year’s musical featuring excerpts from world renowned classic musicals, with the lyrics rewritten in Vietnamese as well as recent hits from global music charts by famous singers like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Beyonce.
Besides, the show’s director Phi Anh and his team will add a new detective musical project titled “Dem He Sau Cuoi” (The last summer night) inspired from Agatha Christie’s classic detective novels and modern comic books like Japanese well-known series Conan. The combination of a musical and a detective story promises to bring audiences new summer experience.
On July 6, the Hanoi Social Club and Humanitarian Services for Children of Vietnam will present the festival titled “Folk Me Folk You.” The event will showcase several local and foreign folk bands, including “Follow the Lemming,” “Jordan Senior,” “The Nerys Joseph Band” and “Dung Thuy & Chi.” There will also be games and workshops throughout the festival at 6 Hoi Vu Street.
For its part, the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents is inviting audiences for its screening of “A Separation” at 2pm on Saturday, July 6. Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, the 2011 Iranian drama film focuses on an Iranian middle-class couple who separate, and the conflicts that arise when the husband hires a lower-class care giver for his elderly father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. “A Separation” won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award.
In HCMC, on July 5, well-known violinist Nguyen Huu Nguyen will join other artists including cello player Catherine Doise from the Paris Pasdeloup Orchestra and pianist Pham Quynh Trang from the Hanoi Conservatory of Music to perform works by Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Glinka at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music at 112 Nguyen Du Street in District 1.
With many cinematography fans, numerous Hollywood blockbusters including Word War Z, Now you see me and The great Gatsby which are being shown at local cinemas are things you will not want to miss. Especially, the Thai comedy and horror movie Pee Mak has added more flavors to the cinematography party. As of July 2, the Thai comedy and horror movie Pee Mak has pocketed nearly VND 8 billion (US$380,300) in box office after 10 days screening in Vietnam. Pee Mark still remains a sell-out in big cities.
For people who love fine art works, the exhibition titled “Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art,” featuring artwork by young Japanese artists in HCMC may be an interesting place to come. Held by the Consulate-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, in cooperation with the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, the event showcases 35 drawings, paintings, and video works by 14 artists active from the latter half of the 1990s throughout the first decade of the 21st century. It will run at the city’s Labor Culture Palace at 55B Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street in District 1 until July 21, from 9am to 7pm every day.
