Short film on Saigon day dreamers goes viral

A short film made by a group of Saigon youths has been praised for its depiction of the lives and dreams of modern young people in the city.

Titled “The Day Dreamers,” the 3-minute-26-second clip features a group of young, somewhat, wild, and fashionable people hanging out together while biking, skating, and dreaming of “crazy” things.

The dialogue-free video, made by BlueR Production, has been shared over social networks since it was posted on Vimeo and Youtube in late July.

According to Nguyen Hoang Phuong, head of BlueR, the clip was made over six weeks in the hope of reflecting a young person’s perspective on Saigon and its changes.

He said the Saigonese in the video are dynamic people who have strong personalities and active lifestyles. They are always willing to welcome new things and share and chase their dreams, even if they are big and crazy.

“The Day Dreamers” was also featured on The Huffington Post, an American news site.

“The short film, "The Day Dreamers" by Vietnamese production team, Bluer Vietnam, showcases Vietnam's own brand of tattooed hipsters hanging out on rooftops, riding fixed gear bikes, skateboarding and fantasizing about crazy ideas," The Huffington Post wrote, in a piece titled ‘Vietnamese Hipsters Reveal The Power of Internet and Globalization.’

“While there is no dialogue, the imagery of these hip Vietnamese youth tells a powerful story about Vietnam's cultural evolution: it strives to look like America.”

Not only has it been lauded for its creative content, but the film has also been favored for the production quality of one-shot scenes, background music, and techniques and effects.

“The Day Dreamers” ends with a scene featuring a young man on his skateboard taking a whale for a walk on a Saigon road, with a background of grass fields and buildings.

“What can be greater than a dream in which you take a trip around your beloved city with the king of the ocean?” Phuong, the BlueR head, excitedly shared about his fantastic dream in the scene.
