Ancient wooden anchor discovered in central Vietnam

A giant wooden anchor was found in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue by a local fisherman when he was diving for fish on Sunday.

The anchor, which is 8.1 meters long and has a rusted iron head, was discovered by Nguyen Hao, 43, from Thuan An Town, Thuan An District.

After salvaging the object from Thuan An beach, Hao sold it to his fellow Nguyen Van Chinh, 30, for VND10 million (US$471).

Chinh said he then reported the finding to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center with the hope of handing the anchor over for research and display purposes.

According to local researcher Ho Tan Phan, the anchor probably belonged to an ancient ship and was dropped when the vessel entered Thuan An port under the reign of the Nguyen Lords in the 17th century.

Phan said archaeologists and researchers have never seen such a big wooden anchor.
