An exhibit, which is held by Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) and is running in Hanoi until October 21, conveys a message of promoting women’s and children’s health and welfare.
The exhibit, themed “Cuu Tung Phu Nu, Cuu Tung Dua Tre” (Saving Every Woman, Every Child), is running at the Museum of Vietnamese Women (36 Ly Thuong Kiet).
The exhibit focuses on such topics as maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition, education, as well as many of the challenges faced by women and girl children worldwide.
The photos on display provide authentic, deeply moving stories about the women and children in the countries in which DFATD has launched assistance programs.
According to DFATD, around the world, the number of women who die each year during pregnancy or childbirth has dropped from 543,000 deaths in 1990 to 287,000 in 2010.
The global number of deaths of children under five years old has also dropped considerably, from nearly 12 million in 1990 to 6.6 million in 2012.
David Devine, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, pointed out the sad thing that the majority of women and children in developing countries die from simple, preventable causes that can be addressed with affordable solutions.
A large number of girls around the world are denied access to quality education, nutrition, and basic health services.
They are also most vulnerable to poverty, violence, sexual abuse and discrimination.
