Mozart’s world-acclaimed opera The Magic Flute will return to Ho Chi Minh City for a one-night-only performance at the Municipal Theater on Sunday.

The opera will be performed by the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) and conducted by Germany’s Askan Geisler.

The Magic Flute is one of the most widely recognized classical opera, revolving around the conflicts and compromises of opposite sides of life told through the story of Prince Tamino, a young man on a quest to rescue Pamina, the beautiful daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the captivity of high priest Sarastro.

The opera’s premiere on September 30, 1971 in Vienna, the capital city of Austria, was hailed as a great success and the play later became the inspiration for hundreds of novels, films, and adaptations.

The costumes used in Sunday’s show were designed by Vietnamese stylist Quynh Paris. Most of the cast are decorated opera singers from Vietnam such as Pham Khanh Ngoc, Dao Mac, and Pham Trang.

The only exceptions are Derek Anthony, who plays the role of Sarastro, and Cho Hae Ryong, who plays the lead female, Pamina.

Cho has been dubbed “the voice of heaven” for her exceptional delivery in many operas by Mozart including The Magic Flute and Bastien and Bastienne, according to a government portal.

The Magic Flute was first performed in Ho Chi Minh City in November 2013 with support from Goethe Institut.

Since then, the masterpiece has been performed annually in the southern metropolis.
