President promises further support to fishermen

President promises further support to fishermen

Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 16:28 GMT+7

On his visits to central Quang Nam and Quang Ngai Provinces, President Truong Tan Sang pledged to make necessary changes to policies to support fishermen, including allowance in shipbuilding and petrol costs. Such support will help fishermen generate higher income while safeguarding national sovereignty over seas and islands, the President said.  Contacting fishermen in Ly Son island district in Quang Ngai  Monday, Sang urged them to uphold solidarity in going off-shore for fishing as it takes them days, even months, away from the mainland.

Fishermen should clearly locate the coordinates where they will fish and must thoroughly comply with international regulations and laws related to fishing grounds, the leader said.

Meanwhile, fishermen asked the Party and State to protect their legitimate rights to operate in sea areas that belong to Vietnam’s sovereignty. They also said marine police must take action to support fishermen’s operation.

Many also recommended the State allocate capital to bring electricity to the island district. Earlier on April 14, during his visit to Ky Ha fishing port in Nui Thanh District in Quang Nam, the President said the State always creates favorable conditions for fishermen to operate at sea.

He called on fishermen to help each other at sea, contribute to the local economic development and protect national security and sovereignty.

The fishermen said they hope the Party and State to give them more long-term loans and assistance in fishing tools and fuel so that they can improve fishing efficiency and thereby enhance income.

Sang also visited the Marine Police Zone 2, where he praised efforts made by the marine police in patrolling and monitoring the enforcement of laws in the sea.

The marine police should also help local people conduct normal fishing activities, Sang said.
