Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has joined talks with Myanmar President U Win Myint in Nay Pyi Taw, during which the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in various spheres.

The meeting was held on Tuesday following a formal welcome ceremony as part of PM Phuc’s official visit to Myanmar on December 17 and 18.

The two leaders agreed that the comprehensive cooperative partnership between the two nations has been growing fruitfully, while the friendship, mutual understanding, and political trust have been enhanced through the regular exchange of high-level visits and meetings.

The relationship should be further strengthened for the sake of the two countries’ people, and for peace, cooperation, and development within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the region, they continued.

PM Phuc and President Win Myint praised the outstanding achievements in collaboration in trade and investment, defense and security, agriculture, tourism, energy, and information and telecoms.

Two-way trade is expected to exceed US$1 billion by the end of 2019, with Vietnam becoming the fifth-largest foreign investor in Myanmar.  

President Win Myint affirmed his support for strengthening collaboration on all channels in order to obtain important achievements ahead of the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2020.

Later the same day, the Vietnamese premier met with State Counselor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi.

During their conversation, Phuc applauded Myanmar’s suggestion on establishing an industrial park of Vietnam in Myanmar.

The Vietnamese government always encourages its businesses to invest in Myanmar and welcomes Myanmarese firms to expand their activities in Vietnam.

They agreed on the importance of maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the East Vietnam Sea, as well as solving disputes by amicable measures in line with international law.

Following their talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing and handing over of multiple cooperation documents, including an action plan for implementing the Vietnam-Myanmar Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership for 2019-2024.
