Vietnam’s Vice-State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan is now the acting president and will stay in that position until the country’s law-making National Assembly (NA) elects a new state president, according to an NA Standing Committee announcement released on Thursday.
The announcement was made right after the 15th NA’s sixth extraordinary meeting and is pursuant to the Constitution and relevant laws of Vietnam.
As per the provisions of the 2013 Constitution, the vice-president shall assume the role of acting president in the event of a vacancy in the office of the president, pending the legislature's election of a new president.
Vo Thi Anh Xuan, born in 1970 in An Giang Province, southern Vietnam, holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry pedagogy and a master's in public governance.
She has been a member of the 12th and 13th Party Central Committee, and a National Assembly deputy in its 14th and 15th tenure.
Previously, she held several positions in An Giang, including serving as the secretary of the provincial Party Committee.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam recently agreed to relieve State President Vo Van Thuong of his duties as a member of the Politburo and a member of the 13th Central Party Committee.
The Party Central Committee's Office announced on Wednesday that the 13th Central Committee met at its headquarters to discuss and give opinions on relieving Thuong of his duties as a member of the Politburo, a member of the 13th Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-26 tenure.
Thuong's violations and shortcomings have stirred negative public sentiment and have had an adverse impact on the reputation of the Party, the state, and his personal integrity.
Having a clear understanding of his responsibilities to the Party, the state, and the people, he submitted a request to relinquish all of his assigned positions and duties.
In accordance with current Party and state regulations and taking into account Thuong's preferences, the Party Central Committee decided to dismiss him from the following roles: member of the Politburo, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-26 term.
Thuong was sworn in as state president in March 2023.
Born in 1970 in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long, Thuong holds a master's degree in philosophy.
