Leaders of more countries have sent telegrams and letters of condolences to Vietnam over the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, honoring the contributions and visions of the Vietnamese leader.
The condolences were sent to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Vietnamese State President To Lam, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly Tran Thanh Man, the Vietnamese people, and the family of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
The content of their telegrams and letters of condolences is as follows:
On behalf of the government and people in Thailand, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin offered his deepest condolences to the government and people in Vietnam as well as the family of comrade Trong over the huge loss.
The Thai leader expressed his admiration for Party General Secretary Trong’s important and exemplary contributions to the cause of national building and development as well as to the enhancement of the Vietnam - Thailand relations, especially the elevation of the two countries’ ties to a strategic partnership during the Vietnamese Party chief’s historic visit to Thailand in 2013.
Leaders of India, on behalf of the government and people in the South Asian country, expressed their sincere condolences on the great loss of Vietnam and the respect for the life and career of Vietnamese Party leader Trong.
They affirmed that they would stand side by side with leaders and the people in Vietnam, as well as the family of Party General Secretary Trong during this heart-rending period.
General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea Kim Jong Un said that Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong devoted his whole life to the struggle for the development of the Party and the state of Vietnam, as well as the Vietnamese people’s happiness.
He spent great efforts on strengthening and developing the cooperative partnership between North Korea and Vietnam in line with the agreements achieved during Kim’s visit to Vietnam in March 2019.
Kim also stressed that the Vietnamese Party chief’s contributions will remain forever in the revolutionary history of the Vietnamese people as well as the friendship between the two countries.
In his telegram of condolences, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed his grief over the passing of Party General Secretary Trong, a great leader of Vietnam.
On behalf of the government and people in South Korea, he sent a message of condolences to the family of the Vietnamese Party leader and the Vietnamese people for losing a highly-respected leader.
He affirmed that Party General Secretary Trong’s achievements and wishes for the enormous growth of Vietnam and the cooperative partnership between Vietnam and South Korea will remain forever in the minds of the two countries’ peoples.
U.S. President Joe Biden sent his deep condolences to the family of Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the people of Vietnam on the loss.
He wrote, “General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a champion of the deep ties between the American and Vietnamese people whose leadership helped nurture the friendship and partnership our countries enjoy today.
“His 2015 historic visit to the White House was a milestone in our bilateral relationship. Thanks to his vision, during my 2023 state visit to Hanoi, Vietnam and the United States became 'comprehensive strategic partners,' the highest level of partnership in the Vietnamese system.”
The people of Vietnam and the United States – and people across the Indo-Pacific region – enjoy greater security and opportunity today because of the friendship between the two countries. That is thanks to Trong, the U.S. leader added.
Biden noted that “the United States – and I personally – will remember and appreciate his commitment to reconciliation and to building a future oriented toward peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and around the world. We honor his legacy and mourn his passing alongside the people of Vietnam.”
Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio was stunned and mournful to receive news that Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, passed away, according to his condolence telegram.
On behalf of the government and people in Japan, he offered the deepest condolences to the government and people in Vietnam as well as the entire family of the Vietnamese Party leader.
Kishida added that meetings with Vietnamese Party chief Trong had become his unforgettable memories.
He also expressed his profound gratitude for the significant contributions of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong to boosting the Vietnam-Japan relations in various fields.
Kishida expressed his heartfelt condolences and wished Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong to rest in peace, honoring his exceptional leadership in fostering the cooperative partnership between the two nations across various sectors.
In their letter, Australian leaders sent their deepest condolences to the National Assembly, the government, and the people in Vietnam as well as the family of Party General Secretary Trong over this great loss.
They appreciated the affection and sincerity that Party leader Trong devoted to the relations between Vietnam and Australia, especially in upgrading the two countries’ bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
They also emphasized that the Vietnamese Party chief's great contributions to the cause of building and developing a peaceful and prosperous Vietnam will always be remembered by the international community.
The Australian leaders added that they would continue to attach importance to cultivating 'strategic trust' in the Vietnam - Australia relationship, as desired by Party General Secretary Trong.
Meanwhile, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres shared the great pain and loss of the Vietnamese people over the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
As the General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee since 2011, Trong was a leader with a key role in Vietnam's contemporary history. Under his leadership, Vietnam continues its strong development path to become one of the world's fastest-growing economies and an important partner of the UN, Guterres stressed.
President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis praised Trong as a dedicated leader who devoted himself to his country for more than a decade.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sok Chenda Sophea, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, and Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko also sent their condolences to Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.
Vietnam’s Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passed away at 1:38 pm on July 19 in Hanoi, Nhan Dan (People) newspaper cited information from the Central Committee on Health Care for Senior Governmental Officials.
The Party chief drew his last breath at 108 Military Central Hospital despite the efforts of leading doctors and healthcare experts to treat his serious illness.
General Secretary Trong was born in 1944.
A state funeral for General Secretary Trong will be held at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi on July 25 and July 26.
A burial service for the Party chief will take place from 3:00 pm on July 26 at Mai Dich Cemetery in Hanoi.
