South Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Youngsam expressed his country’s desire to develop nuclear power plants in Vietnam during a meeting with State President To Lam on Friday.
Upon receiving the South Korean Ambassador, President To Lam expressed his pleasure at the Vietnam-South Korea relationship, which is currently at its most advanced stage of development.
He noted that political trust between the two countries has been continuously strengthened, with remarkable progress in various fields, highlighted by the upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership in December 2022.
President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam’s Party, State, and people place high importance on and wish to further develop this comprehensive strategic partnership with South Korea in a more profound, substantive, and effective manner.
He commended Choi and the South Korean Embassy for their efforts in enhancing bilateral relations and outlined key directions for the ambassador during his term.
These include maintaining regular visits and contacts at all levels through flexible methods, effectively implementing the action program for the Vietnam-South Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and advancing defense and security cooperation in line with the partnership.
Additionally, President To Lam emphasized the need to achieve the trade turnover target of US$100 billion and to aim for $150 billion by 2030.
He also urged the ambassador to encourage South Korean enterprises to expand their investments in Vietnam, focusing on high technology, semiconductor manufacturing, digital and green transformation, and renewable energy.
For his part, Ambassador Choi Youngsam expressed his honor at visiting President To Lam and affirmed his commitment to advancing the bilateral relationship between the two countries in a practical and effective manner.
During the meeting, Ambassador Choi highlighted his intention to work closely with Vietnamese agencies to implement cooperation agreements, particularly focusing on high-level and all-level delegation exchanges.
He also expressed a desire to strengthen substantive collaboration in economics, trade, and investment.
Notably, Ambassador Choi emphasized South Korea’s interest in contributing to areas where Vietnam has needs and his country has expertise, such as developing LNG and nuclear power plants and building strategic infrastructure.
He assured that South Korea would actively support Vietnam in organizing the Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit in April 2025.
