A defensive area exercise commenced in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday with a view to enhancing the handling of complex situations and the coordination capabilities of the city's armed forces.
The exercise opening ceremony was attended by secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen; Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, Commander of Military Region 7; chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Phan Van Mai; Lieutenant General Tran Hoai Trung, secretary of Military Region 7’s Party Committee; chairwoman of the municipal People’s Council Nguyen Thi Le; and Lieutenant General Le Hong Nam, director of the municipal Department of Public Security; among others.
The exercise, which will run until Friday, is organized in three stages: transitioning the city's armed forces to a heightened combat-readiness posture, shifting the city into a national defense posture, and preparing for and conducting defensive operations.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang said the Ho Chi Minh City defensive area exercise is aimed at improving the units’ ability to deal with situations in a national defense posture, prepare and conduct defensive combat, and cooperate with other units in the defensive area.

The exercise is an occasion to check and evaluate the training process and combat readiness of the city’s armed forces, adjust plans, and build a military posture in the city’s defensive area, meeting the demands in new situations.
Thang requested those units that join the exercise to make careful preparations, hold it in line with relevant regulations, follow rules, and ensure absolute safety.
Following the opening ceremony, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Security and the High Command of the city proposed that city authorities hold a drill to respond to complicated situations regarding aviation security and order.
The drill, participated by the High Command of Guard Police under the Ministry of Public Security, the High Command of Ho Chi Minh City, the municipal Department of Health, Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and Division 370, which belongs to the Air Defense-Air Force, was a success.
