The Supreme People’s Procuracy has indicted a former deputy general director of Vinalines and four other former officials for their offenses in a corruption case that caused a loss of over US$230,000 in 2006. The case occurred at the Finance One-Member Co Ltd under the Vietnam Shipping Industry Company and the Bien Dong Transportation Company. They then prepared counterfeit documents in the name of a false company named Tan Minh Nguyet Co Ltd, “the buyer” of the ships and used these false contracts and documents to carry out procedures for payment of the purchase of the ships. According to investigators, these acts have caused a total loss of VND4.8 billion (US$230,800) to the State budget. Of the amount, Hiep pocketed VND50 million. In August 1012, Hiep and eight former officials of Vinalines and their affiliates, including Pham Thanh Binh, former Vinalines chairman, were tried in their appeal hearing for charges of “intentionally violating the State’s economic management regulations, which causes serious consequences”. The court upheld the sentences given to them at their first instance trial on March 30, 2012. Accordingly, Binh, now 60, was sentenced to 20 years in jail, Hiep received a 13-year sentence, and the others got from 10 to 19 years in jail.
