An injured dolphin that washed ashore off the coast of Nui Thanh District, central Quang Nam Province on Friday is being taken care of by local residents, who have created a makeshift pond for the animal to live in temporarily. The dolphin, which is over 2 meters long and weighs about 200 kg, had scratches all over its body, said locals who discovered it 50 meters off the shore of Tam Tien commune on early morning of August 30. As locals realized that the animal was too exhausted to return to the sea, they created a makeshift pond to house the animal while waiting for their wounds to heal. The pond was arranged in front of the whale temple at the whale cemetery in Phuoc Loc hamlet. A similar case happened on December 18, 2012 when a 700kg whale that beached itself off southern Bac Lieu province was rescued by local residents. The stranded animal, with 2.5 meters in length, was washed up on Nha Mat beach at 9 am. Rescuers dug a trench 4m long and 2m wide at the beach to house the whale while waiting for higher tide to release it back to the sea. At about 4:30pm the same day, the whale was put on a canvas and was released back into the deep water.
