Five people, including one Frenchman and a Vietnamese driver, were killed in a crash between a coach and a water truck on Trung Luong Expressway in southern Vietnam on Wednesday.
The mishap, which occurred about 9:20 a.m. on a section of Trung Luong Expressway that runs through Chau Thanh District in Tien Giang Province, also left ten others injured.
Among the victims was a French couple. The husband, identified as 64-year-old Jean-Jacques Loreal, died while his wife Nicole Boussiron Loreal, 60, is now being treated at Cho Ray Hospital based in Ho Chi Minh City, according to a Tuoi Tre reporter at the scene.
Đ.T.T.T., owner of a guesthouse in Ben Tre Province, about 45km from Tien Giang, told Tuoi Tre that the French couple had stayed at the lodge for a few days before they suffered their tragedy.
The owner said Loreal Jean Jacques on Tuesday had her book two coach tickets for him and his wife to travel to Ho Chi Minh City where they were due to take a flight to return to France.
“Before leaving, they said they would visit me on their next visit to Vietnam,” T. said. “But all of a sudden, they ended up in such a tragic accident.”
Preliminary investigations found that the 30-seat coach of Thao Chau Transport Ltd. Company carrying at least 15 people smashed into a water tanker driven by Bui Trung Duong, 30, when the latter was watering trees along the road.
Coach driver Tran Thanh Phong, 35, was immediately killed during the crash.
The coach was seen badly destroyed at the scene while the water truck was slightly damaged.
Police are looking into the cause of the accident.
