Politics

-- The Ba Son Corporation, a Defense Ministry unit, handed over two fast-attack Molniya-class missile vessels that use Russian technology to the Vietnamese Navy High Command during a Tuesday ceremony held at the Ba Son Shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City. The two ships are the third and fourth in a batch of six fast-attack missile vessels built at the shipyard using the Russian technology.   Society

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1 has proposed that the municipal Department of Transport approve a project to build a tunnel underneath the An Suong Intersection, which links District 12 and Hoc Mon District and is one of the city’s traffic congestion hot spots. According to the zone's leaders, the project does not involve housing clearance, but up to nine infrastructural facilities in telecommunications cables, water supply and electricity grids will need to be relocated.

-- Dinh The Phuc, of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, on Monday reported a surge of local demand for electricity consumption due to the sultry weather which has persisted in recent weeks. Statistics revealed demand in May saw a 13.5 percent year-on-year rise, with that among residents in Hanoi soaring by 28 percent. Power outages have occurred in many places in northern provinces and Hanoi in the past few days.

-- On Tuesday morning, residents in Quynh Luu District, located in the central province of Nghe An, spotted a dead shark on the shore. The fish, whose body measures almost five meters in length and weighs around one metric ton, belonged to a variety which is rarely seen in the area, according to locals.

-- Huynh Thi Anh Hong, 36, a Vietnamese scrap dealer, who found five million yen (equal to some US$41,700) in cash hidden in a broken loudspeaker she bought in January last year, finally received the much-awaited fortune on Tuesday in the local media’s “spotlight.” Several banknotes, worth over 1 million yen, are decayed and a Vietnamese bank has contacted its Japanese counterparts to exchange them for new bills.

Business

-- Within the first three months of this year, Vietnamese people spent VND13.6 trillion ($624.71 million) on over three million smartphones, with the devices costing an average of VND4.5 million ($207) each.

-- Dong A Bank launched 42 auto-banking booths on Tuesday. Unlike ATMs, auto-banking booths offer all the banking services just as a conventional transaction office does.

Sports

-- Football for All in Vietnam, a community football (soccer) tournament, kicked off on Tuesday in Hue City, located in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue. The tournament, which is initiated by the Norwegian football federation and runs from Tuesday to Friday, sees the participation of 355 teams with 3,533 players. The players, aged under 12 and 15, are students, including physically and mentally challenged kids, from schools and nursing homes across the country and Laos.

-- The Vietnamese U-23 football (soccer) team smashed its Malaysian counterpart 5-1 last night, increasing the chances of advancing to the semi-finals of the 28th Southeast Asian Games football category. Singapore is the host of the Games that will open on June 5.
