Vietnam’s Da Nang to install more cameras for improved city supervision

Friday, March 04, 2016, 10:29 GMT+7

Authorities in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang plan to install over 850 public cameras to enhance the supervision, suppress criminal activity, and ensure security and order in the locality.

The Department of Police has submitted a document to the Party Standing Committee and chairman of the People’s Committee, proposing the installment of an additional 857 cameras to monitor security, traffic, and order.

Several cameras have already been installed in 126 locations, of which 71 are managed by the Department of Police and the Department of Transport, according to the document.

The additional camera system will be set up along major routes in the city where traffic congestion is typical and in areas where criminal activity is common, such as residential areas, local hotels, and bars among others.

The host systems will be established at the headquarters of the Department of Police, Department of Transport, and Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to facilitate the management and exploitation of the information and data stored by the cameras, VnExpress reported.

Similar main servers will also be placed at the offices of the people’s committees in 11 communes and the police stations in 45 wards in the city to assist local management of safety and security, according to the newswire.

The installation will be funded by the city's budget and is expected to be completed in 2017, it added.

Aside from cameras already installed by competent authorities, a total of 4,745 others have been operational throughout the city thanks to funds from local businesses and citizens.

Following a recent survey, police officers recommended that an additional 3,296 cameras be installed by local people.

A comprehensive plan on the placement of camera systems will be presented in the second quarter of 2016 for discussion and feedback from competent agencies.
