The identity of a pregnant 12 year old in China, believed to be a Vietnamese national, has yet to be determined, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Le Hai Binh said at a press conference in Hanoi on Thursday.
Binh relayed the latest updates from the Consulate General of Vietnam in Shanghai, saying consular officials on Wednesday morning were working with Xuzhou City Police in eastern-central China’s Jiangsu Province, where the girl reportedly had gone for a prenatal check-up earlier this month with her 35-year-old Chinese ‘husband’ and another woman.
Hospital officials notified local police after doctors began questioning the girl’s stated age of 20. Following questioning, the three-week pregnant girl admitted that she was in fact only 12 years old and claimed to have been born in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese consular officials met with the girl on Thursday to help identify her.
“The girl spoke little Vietnamese. She mainly talked in unclear Mandarin so information regarding her identity has not been confirmed,” Binh said.
The spokesperson added that the Consulate is working with Vietnamese and Chinese authorities to confirm the girl’s identity and collect other relevant information regarding the case.
