A low-pressure zone in the southeastern part of the East Vietnam Sea developed into a tropical depression on Saturday morning and is heading to the southern region of the country.

The low-pressure system is forecast to affect provinces along the southern coastline, from Ninh Thuan to Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The weather phenomenon may bring rains and heavy downpours to provinces in the Central Highlands, south-central coast and southern region from Saturday to Monday.

As of Saturday morning, the tropical depression was located at about 200 kilometers north of Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, packing winds at 40 to 50km per hour and squalls at up to 88km an hour, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

It is forecast to travel northwestward at 10km an hour in the next 24 hours.

By 1:00 am on Sunday, the tropical depression is expected to be 150 kilometers northeast of Phu Quy Island, off the coast of Binh Thuan Province.
