Residents of an urban area in Hanoi have been plagued by serious inundation after Tropical Storm Wipha brought heavy rain to northern and north-central Vietnam over the weekend.
Dozens of houses and villas within the Geleximco Le Trong Tan new urban area in An Khanh Commune, Hoai Duc District have been submerged for more than a day due to prolonged rain.
The deluge started on Saturday afternoon and the situation did not seem to improve as of Sunday evening.

Storm Wipha, the third to hit Vietnam this year, made landfall before weakening into a tropical depression in northern Vietnam on Friday night.
Its circulation, however, has brought torrential rains to northern and north-central provinces, with the situation forecast to linger until the end of Monday.

According to the observation of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, most of the streets inside the urban area were flooded.
Along several routes, water levels rose to between 40 and 50 centimeters, posing enormous challenges for commuters.

Many house basements were also deluged.
Some families even used inflatable boats to travel around the neighborhood.

Located about 11 kilometers west of downtown Hanoi, the 135-hectare Geleximco Le Trong Tan new urban area was inaugurated in 2018.
It was developed by Geleximco Group at a cost of VND3 trillion (US$129 million).

Residents here have become quite familiar with flooding as it happens whenever a prolonged downpour occurs, said Thao, who lives in the urban area.
Most of the residents have a pump to help remove floodwaters from their homes, Thao added.
