— Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Vietnam Giorgio Aliberti on Tuesday joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Director General of Europe Department Dinh Toan Thang to kick off a dialogue on sustainable maritime development with the participation of experts from Vietnam and the EU in order to share perspectives, policies and practices from both regions, the EU mission in Vietnam said in a post on its verified Facebook page the same day.

Society

— Vietnam on Thursday morning reported one new COVID-19 case in Hanoi, increasing the country’s tally to 994 with 533 recoveries and 25 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

— A repatriation flight carrying 233 Vietnamese citizens stranded in South Korea due to COVID-19 landed at Can Tho International Airport in the namesake Mekong Delta city on Wednesday.

— Around 170,000 people under underprivileged circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Da Nang are in need of food support, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in Da Nang said on Wednesday.

— Da Nang began free COVID-19 screening for sellers at all local markets on August 18 after the city detected a patient who is a seller at the Hoa Cuong wholesale market.

— From July 15 to August 14, police in Ho Chi Minh City detected 116 foreigners illegally entering Vietnam.

— Police in the northern city of Bac Ninh on Wednesday evening said they had arrested Nguyen Van Thien, 47, the owner of a restaurant in the city, after he allegedly forced a female customer to kneel and apologize for having said on social media that she found helminthes in foods served at the restaurant.

Business

— Vietnam’s import of automobiles increased significantly in July despite impacts caused by the latest wave of COVID-19, with a report from the General Department of Customs showing that the country imported 4,760 cars of various kinds worth US$107.7 million last month, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Education

— Seventy-eight percent of Vietnamese youths agree that the quality of education in Vietnam is improving, according to findings shared in British Council’s Next Generation: Vietnam report announced on Wednesday, the British Embassy Hanoi said in a post on its verified Facebook page the same day.
