A 33-year-old man from Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam has been handed a capital punishment sentence for trading more than three kilograms of drugs between March and June last year.
The provincial People’s Court sentenced Pham Phu Cuong, 33, to death for illicitly buying and selling narcotics during a trial on Thursday.
Nguyen Trung Hieu, 25, Tran Cong Quoc Anh, 33, and Tran Le Dung, 24, were handed a life sentence, while Doan Thanh Hieu, 23, Tran Dang Quoc Duy, 23, and Duong Chi Hai, 33, were jailed for 10 to 20 years for similar offenses.
Le Anh Dung, 40, received a 13-year prison term for the illegal possession of drugs.
From March to June 2021, Cuong bought over 3.1 kilograms of narcotics costing more than VND1 billion (US$43,500) from a man named Ty and another man named Dang Xuan Anh, the indictment showed.
Cuong then divided the drugs into small packages for his personal use as well as to sell to other addicts.
Quoc Anh, Thanh Hieu, Trung Hieu, and Tran Le Dung were in charge of delivering the products and fetching the money from buyers.
Hai and Le Anh Dung purchased the stimulant from Cuong’s gang and resold it to other users.
On June 4 the same year, Cuong ordered more than 660 grams of narcotics from Ty and sent Duy to meet the man and carry out the transaction.
Duy was caught storing the drugs at his home following the purchase.
Officers later expanded their investigation and arrested other suspects.
