Thousands of people gravitated to downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday night to watch a pyrotechnic show marking Vietnam’s Reunification Day and International Workers’ Day.

Municipal authorities organized fireworks displays at the Saigon River Tunnel in Thu Duc City and Dam Sen Cultural Park in District 11 from 9:00 pm to 9:15 pm on Saturday.

The shows were part of the activities to celebrate the 47th anniversary of Vietnam’s Reunification Day (April 30, 1975) and the 136th anniversary of International Workers’ Day (May 1, 1886).

To secure a good spot to watch the pyrotechnic performance at the Saigon River Tunnel, a large number of people arrived at the Bach Dang Wharf Park early in the evening, resulting in congestion along nearby streets.

Many had to park their vehicles far away and walked to the park due to the serious traffic jams.

Vo Thanh Tung, a resident in District 6, said he had taken his wife and kids to the venue at 6:00 pm.

“It’s been a long time since we last watched fireworks, so we decided to have dinner early and arrived three hours prior to the show,” Tung elaborated.

Like many others, Tung believed that watching fireworks brings good luck so he did not mind the congestion to be able to witness the show directly.

In 2021, the pyrotechnic performances marking these two holidays were canceled in Ho Chi Minh City due to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.
