A Vietnamese man from Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam has been brought back to life after doctors anticipated that he would not survive a cardiac arrest.

Quang Nam General Hospital said on Thursday that it had discharged N.H.K., 47, on the same afternoon to let him recover at home as he had completed basic cardiovascular rehabilitation programs at the hospital.

K., hailing from Quang Nam’s Tien Phuoc District and residing in Ho Chi Minh City, was admitted to the hospital in a deep coma on October 23, when his family was taking him back to their hometown as doctors at another hospital in the southern metropolis had prognosticated that he would not have much time left.

Previously, K. suffered from chest pain while eating food and drinking alcohol.

The Ho Chi Minh City-based infirmary diagnosed him with a heart attack and complications of respiratory arrest upon his hospitalization.

During the trip back to hometown, K.’s family members saw his limbs move and decided to take him to Quang Nam General Hospital as a last hope.

Doctors from the department of cardiology at Quang Nam General Hospital quickly activated the red alert protocol to revascularize the blocked coronary artery.

After the intervention, the patient gradually regained consciousness, was able to breathe on his own before being prescribed low-dose vasopressors in the intensive care unit.

A few days later, he went on basic cardiovascular rehabilitation programs until his discharge.

Dr. Nguyen Luong Quang, head of the cardiology department of Quang Nam General Hospital, hailed K.’s case as rare survival of cardiac arrest, whose mortality rate is over 95 percent.

What surprised Quang the most is that K. had traveled more than 1,000km from Ho Chi Minh City to Quang Nam and could still get back to life.
