After a collision between a truck and a motorbike on a bridge in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, a truck driver went missing as he jumped into a river to save a four-year-old boy, who had fallen into the river following the accident.
Le Van Nhan, chairman of the People’s Committee of Giong Trom District, said the body of the boy had been found, while the remaining victim was still missing.
At about 6:00 am on Tuesday, the truck driven by L.V.S., 35, collided with a motorbike ridden by N.T.K.K., residing in Long My Commune, Giong Trom District, on the My Thanh Bridge in the same district. At the time, K. was carrying his four-year-old son named P.T.Q.H..
The crash happened in the middle of the bridge, causing the motorbike to lean on the bridge railing and the boy to fall into the Binh Chanh River, a branch of the Ham Luong River.
The trucker immediately jumped into the river to save the boy but the strong water swept them away.
Hai, a witness to the accident, recounted that “residents along the river shouted for help. Many sailed their boats to the river to find the victims.
“About an hour later, local residents found the boy who was some four kilometers from the initial position. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved.”
The Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital in Ben Tre to which the boy was taken said the boy died before being hospitalized.
At noon on the same day, Ben Tre rescuers and local residents were still looking for the truck driver.
The My Thanh Bridge is just wide enough for a truck to pass through at a time.
The bridge surface is made of wood, so it is rough, causing difficulties for motorbike drivers.
In addition, the space between the bars in the bridge railings is large, which is dangerous to bridge users.
