Seventy-seven people were killed and 96 others injured in 133 crashes across Vietnam during the first six days of the seven-day 2023 Tet (Lunar New Year) break starting last Friday, the traffic safety agency reported.

Compared to the same period of last year’s Tet, the numbers of crashes and fatalities declined by 10 and six, respectively, while the injuries rose by 10, the National Traffic Safety Committee reported on Wednesday, citing the Ministry of Public Security.

Among the total casualties, 15 deaths and 19 injuries were recorded in 26 accidents that happened on Wednesday, the sixth day of the Tet break and the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.

On this day, traffic police handled 3,300 cases of road traffic violations, imposed fines nearing VND6.5 billion (US$276,800) on the violators, impounded 81 cars, 1,757 motorbikes and six other vehicles, and revoked 729 driver’s licenses.

Among the traffic violators were 414 drivers under the influence of alcohol, 221 overspeeding, and four abusing drugs.

The committee reported that its staff in charge of the agency’s hotline received, verified, and handled four calls and messages from people reporting violations of traffic order and safety on Wednesday.

As Wednesday was the penultimate day of the week-long Tet holiday, the waves of people coming back to major urban areas, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to return to work after Tet have increased remarkably.

However, there has been no serious traffic congestion at gateways to metropolitan areas nationwide, as a result of the effective coordination between traffic police units and relevant forces.

In 2022, 6,384 people died and 7,804 others were injured in 11,450 traffic accidents that occurred nationwide, according to the ministry’s Traffic Police Department.

Among the fatalities, 6,265 were recorded in road crashes, 74 in railway accidents and the rest in waterway incidents.
