Amid the overwhelming demand for parking spaces in Ho Chi Minh City, the municipal People’s Committee has asked the Ministry of Construction to consider developing prefabricated high-rise parking facilities.
In a document sent to the Ministry of Construction, the city asked for detailed procedures on the application process for the construction licenses needed for such projects.
In December 2022, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed that the municipal People’s Committee build and operate prefabricated high-rise parking facilities.
According to the department, the number of vehicles in the city has increased sharply over the past several years, especially in the downtown area.
The number of parking spaces available for these vehicles, however, falls far short of demand, with existing parking meeting just 20 percent of the need and over 900 more hectares of parking in need of development.
The city has spent the past few years planning four underground parking lots in association with trade services in the downtown area, but none of these projects have come to fruition.
Therefore, the development of assembled high-rise parking facilities is vital to easing traffic congestion in the city.
Prefabricated parking facilities require just three months to assemble or dismantle.
In addition, they carry a footprint of just 49 square meters for 16-21 cars.
Upon dismantlement, they can be easily transported and reassembled on nearly any empty lot.
Nevertheless, there is no precedent for such parking facilities, so they should be considered carefully to be in line with prevailing regulations.
