The Vietnamese Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan (China) is joining hands with Taiwanese authorities to verify the identity of bodies with Vietnamese identification papers found drifting at sea off Taiwan, deputy spokeswoman of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said on Friday.
Vietnam will also conduct necessary citizen protection measures, Hang added.
Authorities of Taiwan on Thursday informed the discovery of 11 bodies at sea off the island, including seven with Vietnamese identification papers, according to The Gioi va Viet Nam (World and Vietnam) newspaper under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Taiwanese authorities supposed this was a human trafficking case, so they established a team to investigate it.
Taiwan also committed to supporting Vietnam to find out the identity of the victims, and illegal ship operators and brokers.
The Consular Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 23 also worked with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hanoi to seek Taiwanese agencies’ collaboration to verify the information and support Vietnamese representative agencies in Taipei in implementing citizen protection measures.
