Police in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 5 on Tuesday filed charges against a Vietnamese housemaid for stealing around VND1.1 billion (US$46,555) worth of gold jewelry items from a local gold shop where she was working.

The suspect was identified as Nguyen Thi Mong Ly, 37, a native of Ben Tre Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region.

On May 11 this year, the owner of the gold shop in the district reported to police a theft of three bags containing gold chains, pendants, and keychains, valued at about VND1.1 billion ($46,555) in total.

Police officers then launched a probe into the case and discovered Ly was the suspect.

According to the preliminary investigation results, Ly began working as a domestic helper at the gold shop in February this year.

On April 29, the shop owner allowed the employees, including Ly, to have several days off to enjoy a public holiday, which lasted from April 29 to May 3.

However, after the holiday, Ly quit her job at the shop without advance notice.

On the night of May 11, police officers came to Ly’s house in Ben Tre to question her about the case.

Ly then confessed to the theft of the gold jewelry on April 29.

All the stolen jewelry items were recovered by police officers.
