Rooftop solar panels will be installed at administrative agencies in Ho Chi Minh City to generate power to boost the city’s on-site energy sources.

Bui Trung Kien, deputy general director of the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC), told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday that Ho Chi Minh City will have additional rooftop solar power generated from administrative agencies and public organizations after the city implements a resolution piloting some special mechanisms for its development passed by Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly on Saturday.

As per the resolution, administrative agencies and public facilities are allowed to install rooftop solar panels to power themselves and contribute to strengthening the city's energy source.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee is in charge of managing the installation to ensure the preservation of the cityscape.

Potential rooftop solar power projects in Ho Chi Minh City are estimated to reach a total capacity of over 5,080 MWp, with electricity output produced from administrative agencies accounting for 3.27 percent.

Rooftop solar power generation from production facilities is expected to make up 31.28 percent, while the installation at trade and service firms can generate 3.1 percent of the total.

The rooftop solar energy generation from households is expected to represent over 62.3 percent.

Accordingly, the installation of rooftop solar power at administrative agencies in the city could turn out over 160 MWp.

Rooftop solar energy not only powers facilities, but also boosts the city’s on-site power generation on hot days, as well as backs its green economic growth.

After the resolution is approved, relevant agencies should issue guidelines on the installation to smooth the city’s rooftop solar power generation, said Kien.

Besides, it is vital to remove obstacles facing investment in rooftop solar power.

Among bottlenecks are firefighting and prevention certification and problems affecting the cityscape.

“After clear guidance and procedures are introduced, we will implement the special mechanism on rooftop solar power generation, so the city will have more energy,” Kien said.
