The People’s Committee of Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam has written to the Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises proposing the construction of the T2 domestic passenger terminal at Tuy Hoa Airport, with a designed capacity of three million passengers per year.
The proposal was made as the number of passengers passing through the airport is on the high rise, according to the provincial administration.
Tuy Hoa Airport has two runways, but one was shut due to severe deterioration.
The apron of the airport sprawls across an area of 5,000 square meters, while its current terminal covers more than 638 square meters, with a capacity of 550,000 passengers a year.
However, the airport handled over 620,000 passengers in 2022.
The province received 2.2 million tourist arrivals in 2022, and is expected to welcome 2.7 million tourists this year, and more than four million visitors in 2025.
As per the national airport system development master plan approved by the prime minister for the 2021-30 period with a vision toward 2050, Tuy Hoa Airport in Phu Yen Province will have a capacity of nearly three million passengers a year in 2030.
As such, the provincial administration proposed the commission assign the Airports Corporation of Vietnam to prioritize the capital set for investment in the 2021-25 period to pour into the T2 terminal at Tuy Hoa Airport.
The provincial administration suggested developing the T2 passenger terminal at a total cost of some VND1.5 trillion (US$62.2 million) sourced from the public investment plan for the 2021-25 period.
Work on the project is planned to start in the 2023-25 period.
Tuy Hoa Airport can be widened from the current 697 hectares to nearly 1,000 hectares to perfect aviation infrastructure such as air logistics areas, and aircraft repair and maintenance facilities, said the Phu Yen Province People’s Committee.
