-- Vietnam and Japan on Monday issued a joint statement on the elevation of their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership on the occasion of Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong’s official visit to Japan from Monday to Thursday, making Japan the sixth country to see its relationship with the Southeast Asian country reach the highest level in the latter’s international relations.

-- President of the Cambodian National Assembly (NA) Samdech Khuon Sudary will pay an official visit to Vietnam from Thursday to Saturday at the invitation of her Vietnamese counterpart Vuong Dinh Hue, according to an announcement released by the Vietnamese NA’s Committee for Foreign Affairs.

-- Police in Vinh Long Province, southern Vietnam are investigating an incident in which a house fire plus a big explosion killed a 39-year-old man and his 12-year-old son on Monday.

-- Residents living on Duong Quang Ham Street in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City have dismantled their houses to hand land lots over to local authorities to expand the street, which is usually congested during rush hours.

-- Police in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam said on Monday that they had arrested two men for allegedly trafficking in a 14-year-old girl at VND38 million (US$1,564) and forcing her to serve customers at a local karaoke parlor.

-- Can Tho City in southern Vietnam has completed the rebuilding of 501 bus stops, replacing deteriorated ones, a local official informed on Monday.

-- The High Command of Coast Guard Region 4 under the Vietnam Coast Guard said on Monday that it seized a vessel for allegedly transporting 80,000 liters of smuggled diesel oil in the waters of Vietnam on Sunday.

-- Police in south-central Phu Yen Province captured a man who fled away 24 years ago after stealing assets from a fishing boat in 1999, police reported on Monday.
