Many parts of Vietnam’s northern region are forecast to suffer a cold blast this weekend, putting mountainous residents at risk of icy conditions.

The national weather center on Monday afternoon issued a warning against frigid temperatures in the region due to a cold snap.

Biting cold might sweep several northern localities between December 17 and 20, while residents in the north-central region will be grappling with chilly mercury, by the local standards of a tropical country.

The northern mountainous areas will see temperatures plunge to below 10 degrees Celsius, while some parts will endure extreme temperatures of under three degrees Celsius.

The cold spell will also affect the central region with heavy rains.

Many provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai will experience downpours and thunderstorms, starting from Sunday.

In addition, residents in the central region have been warned about strong winds and hail.

The coastal areas there might see high waves of up to over five meters, according to the national weather center.

The upcoming cold snap is forecast to be the strongest this winter.
