Nearly two months after the launch of Metro Line No. 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, passengers can now use NAPAS cards for cashless payments.
The first metro line’s automated payment system, developed by Sacombank and its technology partners, operates on an Open-loop model.
With the new option available from Friday, passengers can now use domestic cards from 25 member organizations of the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS) to make contactless payments at the ticket gates.
To ride the metro, passengers simply tap their NAPAS card at an entry gate when entering the metro. Upon completing their trip, they tap the same card at an exit gate to finalize a payment transaction.
Currently, commuters on the first metro line can use a variety of cashless payment options, including Mastercard, NAPAS cards, and QR codes via the HCMC Metro HURC app.
The first metro line’s automated ticketing system is expected to expand to accept other card brands such as Visa, JCB, UnionPay, and American Express in the coming months.
The Open-loop payment solution offers passengers an advanced, modern payment experience.
It enables the use of credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or e-wallets, making transactions smoother, faster, and safer.
In a special promotion, Sacombank is offering rewards worth VND50,000 (US$2) each to customers who open a Sacombank Mastercard Metro Pass by June.
The first metro line in the southern metropolis officially opened to the public on December 22, 2024 after 12 years of construction, marking a historic milestone in the city’s urban transport development.
The metro line spans 19.7 kilometers, from Ben Thanh in District 1 to Suoi Tien Coach Station in Thu Duc City, including 2.6 kilometers of underground railway and 17.1 kilometers of elevated track.
Operating daily from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, the metro offers 200 trips per day, each taking approximately 30 minutes, with intervals between trains ranging from eight to 12 minutes.
