Central Vietnam’s Da Nang topped the list of 63 Vietnamese provinces and cities ranked in terms of environmental protection performance in 2022 with 73.33 points, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
The announcement put Da Nang atop the list for the second straight year, following their first place in 2021 with 79.82 points.
On December 30, 2023, the ministry announced the 2022 rankings based on its Environmental Protection Performance Indicators (PEPI).
Bac Kan (70.29 points), Lang Son (65.62 points), Bac Ninh (65.29 points), and Tien Giang (65.22 points) Provinces rounded out the top five spots on the list.
Meanwhile, Hanoi ranked 46th with 55.70 points and Ho Chi Minh City placed 19th with 60.80 points.
Bac Lieu, Dak Lak, Yen Bai, Vinh Phuc, and Binh Thuan landed at the bottom of the rankings with 47.04, 49.05, 49.76, 50.12, and 51.63 points, respectively.
The PEPI 2022 rankings are poised to empower provincial and city administration chairpersons by providing valuable insights for the adoption of more effective environmental protection measures and enhancing performance in the years ahead, the ministry said.
This initiative, the PEPI, serves the purpose of monitoring and quantitatively evaluating the environmental protection performance of various localities.
It also assesses the satisfaction levels of local residents regarding the quality of their living environment.
Through the PEPI, the ministry hoped to raise public awareness about environmental protection.
The ministry released its first set of PEPI in October 2019.
During that period, the list comprised 27 component indexes, which were categorized into two groups.
These groups encompassed the evaluation of the implementation of environmental protection objectives and tasks, as well as the assessment of people's satisfaction with the quality of the living environment, according to the Vietnam Government Portal.
