Two twin boys went missing while swimming at a beach in Ngu Hanh Son District, Da Nang City, central Vietnam on Friday morning.

An official from the People’s Committee of Hoa Hai Ward in the district said at noon on the same day that rescuers were searching for the two 14-year-old twins, who were thought to have drowned in the waters in front of Danang Marriott Resort & Spa.

The ward’s administration was notified of the incident at 9:00 am.

The victims were identified as P.G.B. and P.B.T., residents of the ward and students at Huynh Ba Chanh Middle School, said Huynh Quang Trung, chairman of the Hoa Hai Ward People’s Committee.

Over 10 speedboats and coracles were mobilized for search efforts, Trung said.

The search operation was still continuing at 2:00 pm on the day.

Local authorities have called on fishermen and border guards in neighboring Quang Nam Province to join the search.

Nguyen Duc Vu, head of the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourist Beaches, said on the same day that Da Nang is entering the hot weather, so the number of locals and tourists taking a sea bath to cool down is on the rise, Phap Luat (Law) newspaper reported.

To ensure the safety of swimmers and prevent drownings, the management board advised everyone to swim only when rescuers are on duty along the beaches.

Drowning kills some 2,000 young children in Vietnam each year, making it among the 10 leading causes of accidental death for kids, Dang Hoa Nam, head of the Department of Children’s Affairs under the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs, told a child drowning prevention event held in Hanoi in July last year.

Vietnam aims to see some 50 percent of children aged 6-15 take swimming lessons during the 2021-30 period.

In addition, 60 percent of children are expected to be equipped with water safety skills in the next two years, local media reported.
