An international conference on genome editing and sustainable agricultural development took place in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam on Thursday, gathering nearly 100 attendees including scientists, researchers, and industry leaders from 12 countries and territories.
The conference, entitled ‘Advances in Plant Biology -- From Genome Editing to Sustainable Development,' was co-hosted by the U.S. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Institute of Biotechnology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the scientific and educational organization ‘Rencontres du Vietnam’ (Meeting Vietnam), and the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education.
The event comprised four sessions, during which approximately 20 papers were delivered by speakers from a range of countries, including the U.S., China, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, and Vietnam.

Their presentations provided specific explanations on the basic science of genome editing in plants and the latest studies regarding important plants like rice, tomatoes, sugarcane.
The speakers also highlighted genome editing techniques capable of enhancing the quality and climate-resilient capacity of plants.
Aside from featuring expert insights and perspectives related to genome editing, the conference hosted a special session in which participants were briefed on legal issues and different approaches in the management of genome-edited plants.
Speaking at the event, Professor David Jackson from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, said that the conference served as a knowledge-sharing platform focused on the latest breakthroughs in the field of genome editing in order to enhance agricultural productivity and ensure food security in a sustainable environment.
