The Ministry of Transport has written to the prime minister asking for approval to pilot sightseeing tours using four-wheel electric vehicles in six provinces.
If the proposal is passed, six provinces, namely Vinh Long, Phu Tho, Binh Thuan, Tra Vinh, Quang Tri and Ha Nam, will offer electric vehicle services to treat tourists.
The 2008 Road Traffic Law excludes regulations on the operation of four-wheel electric vehicles and the use of these cars to serve tourists in designated locations, according to the ministry.
Since 2010, these vehicles have been operating on a trial basis, the ministry underlined.
Four localities, including Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Quang Binh, were allowed to pilot these electric tourism cars from 2010 to 2014, said the ministry.
In late 2016, the prime minister permitted an electric tourism car pilot program to be implemented in 13 localities.
They were Lao Cai, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Kien Giang, Quang Nam and Ho Chi Minh City.
Until now, 35 of all 63 cities and provinces across Vietnam are offering four-wheel electric tourism car services to carry tourists in designated areas.
Many ministries and local authorities evaluated that the vehicle meets traffic safety requirements, promotes urban civilization and brings convenience for tourism activities.
Furthermore, the electric car is eco-friendly.
The ministry has been collaborating with the Ministry of Public Security to add some regulations on the operation of four-wheel electric vehicles to two draft laws on road traffic order and safety, and road traffic with an aim to pave the way for tourism growth.
