The People’s Committee of Binh Hung Hoa Ward in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City on Monday mustered over 30 sanitation workers and volunteers, along with several garbage trucks, excavators, and backhoes to clean up a 500-meter section of Nuoc Den (Black Water) Canal in the ward, which has been filled with rubbish and water hyacinths.

Nearby residents had endured the foul smell from the heavily polluted waterway for more than a month.

The entire surface of the canal section was covered by plastic bags, bottles, styrofoam boxes, and other garbage.

Several animal carcasses and wastewater contributed to the pollution in the canal.

To bring residents’ lives back to normal, local authorities got the cleanup operation into gear.

It began at 2:00 pm on Monday and is scheduled to finish on Thursday.

Sanitation workers waded into the water to remove waste, while excavators were used to scoop trash and water hyacinths from the waterway.

Joining the cleanup operation, young volunteers were in charge of bringing waste to garbage trucks.

One-fourth of the garbage and water hyacinths were fished out of the canal on Monday afternoon.

An official from the ward’s administration told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the ward would enhance its call for residents living near the canal not to throw rubbish into the waterway to protect their living areas, health, and the environment.
