Hundreds of kilograms of dead freshwater fish have been removed from a beach in Da Nang City, the capital of central Vietnam.
A representative of Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company said on Sunday that the firm’s workers had completed the cleanup of lifeless fish on Nguyen Tat Thanh Beach in Thanh Khe District.
The bodies of the dead fish, mainly tilapias, lay scattered along the beach near a sluice gate, where wastewater is discharged into the ocean, on Saturday.
Ha Van Thanh, the director of the company, stated that upon receiving notification of the fish deaths on Saturday afternoon, the firm promptly dispatched workers to the beach to collect the dead fish and commence treatment on Sunday morning.
Thanh attributed the cause of the fish deaths to their exposure to saltwater.
“We will continue to keep a close watch on the situation to adopt suitable measures to prevent fish from dying en masse and minimize their impact on the environment,” he said.
Rainwater sluices out of some terminal lakes in Da Nang International Airport and 29/3 Park Lake in Thanh Khe District through the sluice gate on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street into the sea.
Da Nang City was struck by a heavy downpour on Friday, so a huge volume of water from these lakes flew through a sewer pipe on Le Do and Nguyen Tat Thanh Streets into the sea.
The flow might have carried freshwater fish into the ocean.
