The lotus-shaped heart of the mammoth Long Thanh International Airport project in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam was finally revealed 300 days after the project got off the ground.

The project is currently 10-20 days ahead of schedule.

Work on the passenger terminal, also known as package 5.10, which is part of the third component of the first phase of the airport project, started in late August last year.

The passenger terminal was estimated to carry a price tag of VND35 trillion (US$1.37 billion). After completion, the terminal will be able to serve up to 25 million passengers and handle 1.2 million metric tons of cargo per year.

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the investor of the project, said that the terminal would feature three stories and span 376,450 square meters.

The passenger terminal will also house 40 parking slots for Code C, E, and F aircraft.

Some 3,300 workers are currently working on the subproject and over 950 pieces of machinery are in use.

“In late May, work on the concrete girders for the first floor of the terminal was finished ahead of schedule,” ACV said in its recent report.

Package 4.6, including the construction of runways, taxiways, and aprons, began at the same time as the passenger terminal package.

The concrete surface of package 4.6 has already been completed.

Contractors are speeding up work on package 6.12, which consists of connection roads T1 and T2.

T1 linking the airport and National Highway 51 will be 4.28 kilometers long and will have six lanes, while T2 is designed to connect with Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, have four lanes, and span 3.5 kilometers.

The Dong Nai Province People’s Committee said that 100 percent of the cleared site had been handed over to the investor to implement the first phase of the airport project.

All affected households have been compensated and resettled.

The first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport project is expected to cost VND110 trillion ($4.3 billion).

The entire airport project will span 5,000 hectares and carry a VND336.63 trillion ($13.3 billion) price tag. Once finished, the airport will be the largest in the nation with an annual capacity of 100 million passengers and five million metric tons of cargo.
