As 2G mobile services are scheduled for termination in Da Nang City, located in central Vietnam, from September this year and local residents will be unable to use mobile phones with 2G technology, the municipal administration has sought to support poor and near-poor households in purchasing smartphones with 4G or 5G technology.
2G, short for second-generation cellular networks, allows services such as phone calls, text messages, picture messages, and multimedia messages.
However, the technology does not let users download data, send and receive emails, or access the Internet.
Da Nang will be the first locality in Vietnam to shut down 2G services, forcing mobile device users to shift to smartphones.
The coastal city currently has some 3,810 households using mobile phones with 2G technology.

The Da Nang administration said on Thursday that it had proposed the municipal People’s Council provide financial support of VND2 million (US$79) to each poor and near-poor household whose members do not have smartphones.
Each household will receive the support once.
The Vietnam Telecommunications Authority under the Ministry of Information and Communications has also announced that telecom enterprises would provide 2,010 smartphones to households in Da Nang.
As a result, the city will give financial support to the remaining 1,800 households.
