-- A two-day state funeral for General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong begins today, with the ceremony to pay respects starting from 7:00 am at the National Funeral Hall at No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street in Hanoi.

-- State President To Lam on Wednesday received President of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba Esteban Lazo Hernandez, who is in Vietnam to attend the state funeral of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, while Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh the same day held a reception for President of the Australian Senate Sue Lines during her visit to Vietnam to attend the state funeral.

-- Leaders of many countries along with ruling parties, communist parties, and partner parties have continued sending letters and messages of condolence to Vietnam on the passing of the Party chief, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Society

-- Rain is forecast to weaken in the northern region on Thursday, while residents in the central and southern regions will experience downpours, paired with thunderstorms, late in the afternoon and at night, according to the national weather center.

-- Police in Muong La District under the northern province of Son La successfully rescued five people from raging floodwaters on Wednesday.

-- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday ordered relevant ministries, agencies, and localities to focus on addressing the consequences of storm Prapiroon, the second to affect Vietnam this year.

-- Da Lat City in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong is planning to widen the pedestrian space along Tran Quoc Toan Street to enhance the tourism appeal around Xuan Huong Lake and Cu Hill, an official announced on Wednesday.

-- In Vietnam, people spent nearly VND150 trillion (US$5.8 billion) shopping online in the first half of 2024, according to e-commerce market research platform Metric.

World News

-- U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris assailed Donald Trump on Tuesday at her first campaign rally since replacing President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, while a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed her taking a marginal lead over her Republican rival, reported Reuters.

-- A software bug in CrowdStrike's quality-control system caused the software update that crashed computers globally last week, the U.S. firm said on Wednesday, as losses mount following the outage which disrupted services from aviation to banking, according to Reuters.
