Nearly 80 sidewalks and alleyways in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, are being renovated out of their dilapidated condition at a total cost of US$8 million.
Many footpaths in the district have deteriorated, with several sections of sidewalk losing or displacing tiles, making it difficult for residents to walk, according to Pham Quach Truong Giang, head of the District 1 Construction Investment Project Management Board.
As part of the plan, 12 sidewalks, along with 64 alleyways and road sections across 10 wards that have degraded and settled, will be repaved with granite.
This effort aims to enhance the cityscape.
The sidewalk and alleyway upgrade project is expected to cost nearly VND200 billion ($8 million) and is slated for completion by the end of 2024.
On several sidewalks along streets such as Nguyen Thi Nghia, Nguyen Trai, Huynh Thuc Khang, Pham Ngoc Thach, Nguyen Van Chiem, Nguyen Van Cu, and Nguyen Thai Hoc, old bricks have been removed in preparation for resurfacing, as observed by reporters from Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
“Locals are excited to see the sidewalks getting a facelift,” said Kim Huong, a resident of Nguyen Trai Street in District 1.
“When we’re not busy, we’ll help the workers with the sidewalk upgrades to expedite the project’s completion."
