Police in Bac Giang Province, northern Vietnam have imposed an administrative fine of VND7.5 million (US$299.5) on a local man for defaming the country’s Party chief and State President To Lam on Facebook.

On August 10, the police agency in the province’s Tan Yen District discovered that Facebook user ‘Thuong Tran Thuong’ left comments on a post by another netizen ‘Hung Thanmanh’ in a group where members offer their stuff for sale.

The police said that these comments had discredited Party leader and President Lam.

After a verification process, the forces found out that 38-year-old Tran Van Thuong, residing in Tan Yen’s Quang Tien Commune, is the owner of the Facebook account ‘Thuong Tran Thuong’.

Thuong was taken to the police agency for questioning, where he admitted that he had left the comments defaming the top leader.

The man was briefed on some regulations on the issue before taking down his comments and pledging not to repeat the offense.
