The British government has announced a grant of US$1.31 million for Vietnam to overcome the devastating aftermath of typhoon Yagi, while the Singapore Red Cross and Singaporean businesses in Vietnam have also pledged funding for the Southeast Asian country.

The UK Embassy in Vietnam on Saturday said that the British government had earmarked £1 million ($1.31 million) for funding humanitarian assistance to Vietnam in the initial phase of the country’s response to the impact of typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in northern Vietnam on September 7.

The funding will be allocated to humanitarian partners and will reach individuals directly through providing emergency supplies, cash assistance, and critical services, such as health, water, and sanitation, the embassy said in a press release on the same day.

“The UK government stands beside the people affected by the devastating impact of typhoon Yagi in Vietnam,” UK Minister for Development Anneliese Dodds was quoted as saying in the press release.

Dodds added that her agency has coordinated closely with the Vietnamese government and humanitarian partners to identify where relief efforts can have the greatest effects.

“The UK is at the forefront of climate cooperation with Vietnam as co-leaders of the Just Energy Transition Partnership,” the embassy said.

“In addition to supporting the initial phase of the typhoon response, this funding will help to boost Vietnam’s ongoing resilience to climate change.”

In a show of support for Vietnam, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has pledged S$50,000 (US$38,500) to assist the country in recovering from the aftermath of the typhoon, Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Jaya Ratnam stated in a letter to Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on Friday.

Extending his deep condolences to all those impacted by the powerful storm, Ratnam said an expert team from SRC will be sent to Vietnam to help remedy the consequences of the natural disaster.

Meanwhile, the Singaporean business community in Vietnam has pledged VND1.5 billion ($61,200) in support for the typhoon’s victims through its ‘SG Community Cares’ initiative.

Wilmar, a long-standing Singaporean enterprise in Vietnam, has launched a fundraising campaign targeting VND10 billion ($408,200) to help such victims and those engaging in relief activities in by hard-hit places, including Quang Ninh.

Several days ago, the governments of Australia and the U.S. also announced a total of $3 million as immediate humanitarian aid to Vietnam’s efforts to cope with the destruction of typhoon Yagi.

By 6:00 am on Sunday, typhoon Yagi and the subsequent floods and landslides had taken 281 lives, injured 1,921 people, and caused 67 others to go missing, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
