A cold air mass is moving toward northern Vietnam and could begin to affect the northeastern region from early Tuesday, the national weather agency reported on Sunday.

Following its arrival in the northeastern region, this cold air mass is predicted to spread to most of the northwestern region, north-central areas, and parts of central Vietnam.

During the cold spell, the weather in the northern and north-central regions will turn cooler, especially at night and early in the morning.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting noted that residents in the northern mountainous locations will possibly experience chilly weather patterns.

The lowest temperatures in the north and the north-central province of Thanh Hoa are generally expected to range from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius and mountainous areas may drop below 16 degrees Celsius.

In Nghe An and Ha Tinh, both in the north-central region, the lowest temperatures may reach 20-23 degrees Celsius.

Between Sunday evening and Monday night, northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa could see moderate to heavy rainfall of 40-120mm.

The weather agency warned of possible whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind during thunderstorms.

Flash floods and landslides could occur in mountainous areas, while low-lying and urban areas are at risk of flooding.

Typhoon Krathon

In related news, the meteorological agency said that winds in the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea are expected to intensify from Sunday night due to the impact of typhoon Krathon, which was spotted in the waters northeast of Luzon Island in the Philippines at 1:00 pm on Sunday.

The agency said in its forecast issued at 10:00 am on Monday that Krathon will move slowly in a west-northwest direction toward the southern part of Taiwan over the next 24 hours.

Earlier, meteorological experts elaborated that there was little chance of the typhoon entering the East Vietnam Sea.

From Monday to Tuesday, extremely rough seas, high waves of 4-6 meters, and powerful winds are possible in the northeastern part of the East Vietnam Sea.

All vessels operating in these areas face a high risk of being affected by whirlwinds, strong winds, and large waves.
